Autumn is a busy time for us at Clent History Society. This season’s meetings started well in September when Anthony Collins talked to us about ‘Worcester Inn Signs‘. He took us on an illustrated tour of local inns, looking particularly at the significance of names which linked to historic incidents and people or perhaps pointed to the geographic location. It was interesting, if a little disheartening, to reflect on just how pub signs have changed in the digital age. Many felt that the traditional art of painting pub signs was one well worth keeping into the future. Well done to those breweries who continue this tradition.
Thursday 25th October is our next meeting. We look forward to another visit from Brian Draper, a well known local historian and always a popular speaker. We felt that it was time we took a closer look at Ironbridge and Coalbrookdale, the birthplace of the Industrial Reveloution. Although they are almost on our doorstep (If we cross a County boundary into Shropshire) and many of us have visited the museums, we expect Brian will throw new light on just what did go on there and why that narrow little gorge made such an impact on Britain and the rest of the world too.
The meeting will be held at 8 pm in Clent Parish Hall, Church Avenue, admission is £2.50, including tea or coffee.
