John Amphlett was born on 22nd March 1845 and became Squire of Clent in 1868. His family had moved to the area in the 17th century and he was the seventh Squire Amphlett. He kept a detailed and extensive diary, which is now in Worcester College, Oxford, and wrote this book after much research amongst old documents and Latin texts.
John Amphlett died in 1918 and the Amphlett male line ended in 1949 with the death of his grandson.
