Trip Report – Coventry (June 2016)

COVENTRY TRANSPORT MUSEUM & CATHEDRAL.
Margaret Hathaway.

In June we spent a day based in Coventry with a morning at the newly refurbished transport museum and the afternoon at the cathedral. We joined with Belbroughton History society for this trip and are particularly grateful to them for organising this excellent day.

The Transport Museum.

I think I was not alone in expecting the Cathedral to be the highlight of the tour . However the transport museum was a complete revelation. We were pleased to have had a guided tour picking out some highlights of such a fascinating and beautifully laid out collection. The bikes, cars and commercial vehicles gave great insights into the way the town evolved. The huge displays of toy cars brought back so many memories and the speed record breaking vehicles were quite astonishing. it would be easy to spend hours there and many of us intend to go back to explore and to add this to the list of places we take visitors.

The Cathedral.

We had a choice of two tours of the cathedral; one majoring on history and the other on art and reconciliation. Both were most enthusiastically received and we were impressed with the breadth of knowledge of the guides and their very clear dedication to the place. the amazing contribution of these volunteers is quite remarkable. the history tour was lead by a guide who is Catholic and German so this was particularly poignant- reconciliation in action!
