On Wednesday 13 August 2014 members and friends of Clent History Society will be making a visit To Stanway House, near Cheltenham.
The Stanway estate and manor house, has been owned by the Tracy family and their descendants, the Earls of Wemyss, for 500 years. The 13th Earl, who has lived at Stanway since 1976, has restored many of the original features of the estate. Of particular note is the water garden, believed to have been created by Charles Bridgeman. According to Bridgeman his style of gardening aimed at creating ” incomprehensible vastness”. His canal, cascade and avenue gave that feeling to the Stanford estate.
Stanways’ fountain, added in 2004 and reaching 300ft, is the tallest gravity fountain in the world. The fountain will be fired up especially for us during our visit.
There may possibly be one or two last minute places available on our trip . Ring Margaret Hathaway 01562 886948 to check & for times and prices.
