24th March – “From Clent to Tonga” The Life of John Thomas

Thursday 24th March
Clent Parish Hall,
Church Avenue

For our first talk of 2011, long-standing society member, Dr. Peter Bloore introduces us to the life of John Thomas born in Clent in 1797. He and his wife were sent by the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society to Tonga in the South Pacific. To this day “Mr. Thomas” is remembered and revered by the islanders where he practiced his work for over thirty years.

The first Wesleyan chapel in Clent was located nearly opposite the Fountain Inn on Adams Hill. A new chapel, dedicated to John Thomas, opened in 1869 at Stool Style on the Hagley side of Bromsgrove Road. It is now a private residence but is recognisable by the round window on the side.

The talk will be held at the usual venue, Clent Parish Hall, at 8.00pm.

Admission is £2.50 including refreshments. Everyone’s welcome and we hope to see you there.
